Barolo Bussia 'Dardi le Rose' 2019

The Collas are one of the oldest and most established families in Piedmont, and yet their wines somehow remain under the radar. Over the last few vintages, quality has been especially strong. Readers who enjoy transparent, classically made Barolo and Barbaresco will want to check these wines out. Antonio Galloni

The Colla's have a little over six hectares in the Bussia hamlet of Dardi which historically was part of Bussia Soprana. Pietro's uncle, the late and legendary Beppe Colla, made the famous 1961 Prunotto Bussia from these vines, the first single vineyard wine in Barolo, and in doing so pioneered the concept of cru Barolo (and Barbaresco). Bussia is renowned for Barolo of great depth and concentration that rewwards long term cellaring. Typically, this has brooding aromas of scorched earth, spices and tobacco that lead to rich, complex layers of dried figs, plums and prunes that gradually open on the palate, finishing long and sweet.

Poderi Colla is one of the sleeping giants in Piedmont. The wines are consistently outstanding, or better, yet remain largely undiscovered, for now. The wines remain quite accessible, which is great news for those who enjoy classically built wines. The 2019 Barolo Bussia Dardi Le Rose is an exotic beauty that very much captures all of the nuances of this site. Sweet floral and savory notes open first. Layered and also quite potent, the 2019 has a ton to offer, but it also needs time to come around. Graphite, rose petal, mint, sage and sweet pipe tobacco extend the finish, with veins of tannin that wrap it all together. Superb. 95 points, Antonio Galloni
